Fax over Internet Protocol (FoIP) is the technology that enables the internetworking of fax machines with a packet-based network. Using FoIP, a fax is transmitted via the Internet rather than the traditional method of sending faxes via the telephone line. The digital data requires less bandwidth than the analog data, so FoIP is more efficient than analog faxing. The problems with manual faxing: printing out the document, walking to the fax machine, waiting for the fax to go through, not to mention the cost of fax machine supplies and repair, are solved. FoIP allows users to send and receive faxes directly from their email client.
FoIP is the next logical step to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), a technology that allows almost everyone with a broadband internet connection to use it as a low-cost phone line.
